I was gifted the Sunshine Box subscription when my baby was born. We absolutely love every book we have received so far. They are thoughtfully curated and provide so much material for “discussion” with my baby. She especially loves the books with photos of real people. It means so much to have wide-ranging representation of children and their families delivered to my doorstep. OurShelves’ mission is completely aligned with my family’s values and is such a bright light in the current dark political and social climate. Also, I have been an elementary school teacher for 13 years and have very high standards for books, especially in terms of being actually engaging and meaningful rather than preachy and inaccessible, and every book has passed my “test” with flying colors. I’ve even purchased some of them for other friends with babies. We love OurShelves!

I highly recommend OurShelves! As a mother of a biracial son and a mental health counselor I very much appreciate the variety of cultures, perspectives, and representation of different types of families that are seen in these books. Having them delivered quarterly is perfect for us to build our library without being overwhelmed by too many books. We have been getting the sunshine box and my 1 year old loves the books- often choosing them for his bedtime stories- and they have been favorites for months! We are excited to try the rainbow box next!

Our family received a year of Ourshelves as a gift when our twins were born. We just received our 4th quarterly box, and have been so pleased with all the books from this last year. It's always an exciting day when the new books come and helps us keep our bookshelf fresh and interesting. Some of our family favorites have come from Ourshelves. As a two mom family, it's been so wonderful to see our family represented in some of the books we've received. We have been subscribed to OurShelves for two years, since our little one was just a newborn! We love that our bookshelf is continually full of books representing a wide variety of people. The books are well chosen and high quality, and some of our little one's favorites!

My whole family has been impressed and delighted by our first year subscribing to OurShelves for our now almost 2-year old. They provide books with beautiful illustrations or photographs that are fun to read out loud and cover the full range of toddler interests (naming/finding objects, rhyming stories, just looking at pictures of other real babies). All with diversity in mind and on the pages!

Friends of ours subscribed and suggested we might like to as well. OurShelves has exactly the books we want to read our 10 month old child: books that reflect a diversity of ways of being in the world and highlight people and life choices less often reflected in mainstream literature. We are overjoyed to read a book that celebrates Pride, a book that shows kids of all backgrounds and abilities playing with toys (contrary to gendered stereotypes), and a book about Native joy. Finally, books I *want* to read to my baby. Easiest and best purchase I’ve made for my child all year.

What a great organization. I love that OurShelves makes books with diverse characters available to children and families while also demonstrating to publishers etc that there is demand for these stories! I have a subscription for my son and have also gifted OurShelves boxes to children of friends.

We have received 3 boxes so far and loved all of them! We have the board book subscription and some of the books have become my daughter’s favorites. There have been some that we already own, so we have saved those for gifts for friends.

I absolutely LOVE OurShelves! As a busy parent, I am thrilled to have this subscription box of beautiful books that are picked out for my son and sent to my door. Having diverse books in my home is something I strive for and I used to spend so much time looking for them, only to be sometimes disappointed with their story quality when I received them. With OurShelves, they are thoughtfully doing this for me and I feel like they have taken a huge task off my plate! The books are always excellent and my two-year-old son just can’t get enough, these are his favorite books! I also am VERY impressed with how responsive, pleasant and helpful Alli is! I am so excited about this service! My family is multi-racial and multi-cultural and it is so hard to find books that reflect this kind of family experience, so I am thrilled that this service exists. This service is an excellent way to fill your book shelf with beautiful, inclusive books for children. My little one is just developing an understanding of the world, and knowing that she will continually read stories about diverse children in diverse families is so important to build empathy and understanding. Even though our family looks traditional, including stories from indigenous families, single sex parents, and children ignoring societal norms will help us to start important conversations and foster a sense of respect and understanding for our children.
I am so thankful for this organization taking the time to find this beautiful literature. As a working mom, I haven't been able to spend the time locating such important books. I highly recommend the book box to anyone hoping to foster these inclusive feeling in the children they love.
