Curated for children ages 5-8, this book box is filled with diverse books for kindergarten and elementary-aged children as well as diverse books for elementary school classrooms and libraries. Enjoy these inspiring picture books that both ignite imagination and wonder and feature diverse and traditionally under-represented characters and families.

  • Cherish diverse books for your elementary school and kindergarten-aged children (ages 5-8). Note that these selections are generally picture books and not early readers or chapter books (occasionally, we will include an early reader or early chapter book).
  • Affirm your values of equity, anti-racism, social justice, inclusion, love, and yes, fun, while enjoying expert-curated, high-quality children's books with your child(ren).
  • Our books proudly feature racially and ethnically diverse, LGBTQ+, disabled, feminist, and other traditionally under-represented characters and families in children's books.
  • Feel pride knowing you're exercising your consumer power to be counted in support of diverse children's books. OurShelves advocates for the many diverse books still needed, in part by proving the significant, yet largely under-estimated, audience for such books through our growing membership.
  • Our Curation Team members who review your books share expertise from librarianship, teaching, early childhood development, psychology, racial and other identity bias, and parenting. All Curation Team members -- and their children -- share the lived experience of being under-represented in children's books.
  • After your first shipment, which will ship within 5-7 business days of you placing your order, books arrive quarterly -- in March, June, September, and December.
  • Free shipping.

Who will love these books?

These beautiful picture books are mindfully and lovingly chosen by our expert Curation Team for children ages 5-8 years old. Note that these are generally picture books and not early readers or chapter books (occasionally, we will include an early reader or early chapter book). If you would like OurShelves, in the future, to expand our offerings to reach older children and by offering chapter books, please let us know here.

When will my box book be delivered?

Your first box will ship within 5-7 business days of placing your order. After your first box, packages will be delivered each quarter - in March, June, September, and December. You will receive a notification each time one of your boxes has shipped.

What will be inside my box?

Three-book boxes generally include two hardback books and one paperback book. Five-book boxes generally include three hardback books and two paperback books. With each three-book or five-book delivery, in addition to your books, you’ll receive a post card with discussion questions and/or a special activity idea for one of your books to keep the fun and conversation going! (During the pandemic, these special activity ideas are currently provided electronically).

Why do you include paperback books?

While paperback books are often somewhat older books, we offer the combination of hardback and paperback books because there are wonderful paperback books centering under-represented characters and families that are worth cherishing. Combining hardback and paperback books also allows us to stay within the current price points.

If you would be interested in boxes with only hardback books at a higher price point, please let us know here.

Who pays for shipping?

OurShelves does - you receive FREE SHIPPING with your subscription! Shipping within the U.S. is on us. If you’re outside the U.S., please let us know by clicking here — we are exploring the best ways to ship outside the United States!

What if I have feedback to share?

Yes, please. We always welcome your feedback here.

We got OurShelves books when our oldest was a baby - we have now benefited from these books for 8 years. We love the stories and are especially delighted by the fact that each book comes beautifully illustrated in fun and engaging ways. They have served as wonderful conversation pieces that have opened the door to some many curious conversations with our kids. We even got our son's preschool to purchase some of the books. Cannot speak highly enough.

I am so glad we found Our Shelves. The curation of books have been incredible. We never would have come across many of these on our own. They all expose our child to the beautiful diversity that is our world.

Such fantastic books!

We have been Ourshelves subscribers since my nephews were young enough for rainbow boxes and now they have grown out of the treehouse box. We've shared so many wonderful stories with them, and their parents have been grateful for the quality and variety, too. The Ourshelves team is so responsive and helpful - they even noticed that my nephews are twins and made a point to include twin books in the boxes. We've sent Ourshelves boxes to almost all the kiddos in our lives and will continue to do so!

Wonderful source for representative books

My books arrived quickly and in perfect condition. The books combine fun and relatable stories with beautiful artwork. I enjoyed reading them and sharing them with family members. I look forward to sharing these books with the young readers I tutor. And I appreciate the opportunity to support publishers who sell inclusive books. I look forward to my next book box!

Gifts that keep on giving!

Three generations of poets, authors, songwriters, and playwrights in my family have bestowed upon their descendants a love of reading, but they didn't write about the topics that my "special" children and grandchildren could identify with. Discovering Ourshelves has been a blessing, on many levels. For the past few years, shopping for birthday and Christmas gifts for my disabled, gay, feminist, and biracial loved ones has been a no-brainer! I enjoy reading the books first, then I inscribe them, wrap them up, send them on, and eagerly await the heartfelt thank-you notes.

Kitty, thank you for being such an incredibly special member of our community! The words you share above mean the world to us! Thank you again to you, your children and grand-children for partnering with us to ensure all kids and all families have a place on OurShelves!

Huge fan!!!

I’m a huge fan. We bought a subscription for my daughter’s tutor who now teaches Kindergarten at an elementary school. She shared a picture from her classroom with us last week and I noticed 2 books from Ourshelves on “her shelves.” I’m excited to get subscriptions on my list to give as Christmas presents for nieces and nephews. Keep up the great work!

LOVE OurShelves!!!

I love OurShelves. I work with elementary students and they have loved being able to find books where they are represented. It has helped me become more aware of my student's needs and how diverse the world truly is. I love being able to find books I can recommend to other counselors. There have been multiple times where I have bought copies of books after reading from my box to give as gifts.

The best book subscription!

We love OurShelves so much that it’s become our go-to gift for anyone with kids. Thoughtfully curated books, with a wide cast of characters and varying levels of identity as the main theme, that are MY favorite to read as well as the kids.’
My rhyme & fact-obsessed 7yo loves My Mommy, My Mama, My Brother, and Me. My anxious 8yo must have requested Saturday every night for at least two months, and it totally helped him process things not going to expectation, and my 5yo still sleeps with The Bread Pet. And of course we had to resume keeping a sourdough starter and baking bread on the regular.
We’ll be customers until we age out—but we hope you keep adding levels so that never happens!

Amanda, thank you for this incredibly special feedback! There's nothing better than thinking about each of your kids enjoying their OurShelves books in their own very special ways. Thank you so much for sharing OurShelves-curated books with your own children and other children through gifting as well. And yes, we do hope to grow our book offerings to reach older aged children as well - stay tuned! Mostly, thank you for partnering with us to ensure all kids and all families have a place on OurShelves! We're so grateful you're part of our community!

Great for Children

I love this subscription service. I work for a school system, and we have been working hard to showcase diversity with our book selections. Ourshelves makes it so easy. The owner has personally worked with me to ensure that I am getting the books that meet the needs for my students. This is a wonderful company to support.

You need this subscription!

We now have beautiful, engaging books with diverse representation of all types of kids and families delivered every quarter. OurShelves is influencing the publishing industry, which is no mean feat, and they’re doing it in the most positive way possible. More books that are inclusive on every level now exist because of them.
My kids picked a book OurShelves sent one night when my folks were babysitting...they aren’t just opening conversations for kids; my kids taught their grandparents about gender identity. It’s a beautiful thing.

Katie, thank you for these incredibly kind and supportive words! We love hearing that your OurShelves books are being enjoyed by three generations in your home! Thank you also for sharing that we both deliver curated and high-quality diverse children's books and that we're also advocating for the many more diverse books still needed. That dual mission is very important to us. We are so grateful to have such incredible members like you in our community!

Love this subscription!

Our family has really enjoyed this book subscription. The books are very well chosen and are full of beautiful stories and illustrations that bring our children into the worlds of kids and families from so many diverse backgrounds. The books from these boxes are consistently at the top of the pile for bedtime stores that are read over and over. Thank you for making sure these stories are shared, OurShelves!

Cilicia, we are so glad to hear that your OurShelves books are at the top of your bedtime pile! It is important to us that children love the books we send that are filled with characters and families that are traditionally under-represented. Thank you so much for being a special member of the OurShelves community from our start!

High Quality Books and Skilled Curation

Sometimes books that focus on representation lose a little in dimension and writing style (Anyone else remember the super dry mental health/counseling affirmation books or the "all these different kids" books that still didn't have queer kids in them?). The books curated for us were interesting, multidimensional, and we saw our family and community members reflected in them. "When Aidan Became A Brother" was the first book I have read featuring a trans kid and the story was not 100% about transitioning. It gives context and then moves on to Aidan becoming a big brother, and his complex emotions about it. Our other books were also well written and interesting. Absolutely recommend. Good quality, and truly thoughtful curation.

Thank you, Sarah, for this review. Our Curation Team -- sharing their expertise from academia, psychology, the library, the classroom, early childhood development, early childhood development of bias, and 100% of whom have the lived experience of seeking more, higher quality and 'multi-dimensional' (as you say) representation of themselves, their children and others in kids' books -- works very hard at curating our books. Thank you for affirming this work. The Curation Team, and all of us, are also deeply committed to advocating for the many diverse children's books of the quality you describe that do not yet exist, but are greatly needed. We're grateful that you're part of our community as we prove to publishers the significant audience for these books so that they perceive greater opportunity, rather than risk, in creating more of these books in the future. Thank you again for your commitment to ensuring all kids and all families have a place on OurShelves!

So GREAT!

I've encouraged all my friends to order a subscription -- I love the dual mission, and the quality of the books is great!
We just got our first box of 3 yesterday, and our 6-year-old triplets were so excited to read! I always felt like I had to work too hard to FIND books like this -- showcasing the diversity of human experience -- and now someone is doing the work for me...one thing off my plate!

Thank you so much for these kind words about our dual mission and our book selections! We know how hard it can be to find high-quality children's books centering diverse characters. In fact, that's why we are here -- to share the expertise of our Curation Team with all of the incredibly busy grown-ups out there who are committed to cultivating inclusive values with the special children in their world. We want to make it easier to find these books. In turn, these books' sales will grow, which will encourage publishers to produce more and more of them. Thank you for your incredible support and being part of the OurShelves community!

OurShelves is a quarterly diverse book box for children.

We curate high-quality children’s books that feature racially and ethnically diverse, LGBTQ+, disabled, feminist, and other characters and families currently under-represented in kids’ books.

We advocate for the many more diverse books still needed, in part by proving the significant audience for such books through our growing membership.
