We have been subscribing for five years. We started before our first grandson was born in the hopes of introducing him to an array of family types and children of different cultures. We continued our subscription as we learned that there would be two more grandsons. We've been delighted to see our mixed race grandson gravitate to the books that feature people who look like him on the cover. When most bookstores are limited in the cultural depictions, Our Shelves proves that you can create fun books depicting families from different cultures.

I was gifted a subscription by a dear friend to support my classroom library. It has been a wonderful experience! The books are high quality, and diverse in both material and representation. My students are able to see themselves in the characters, see natural representations of their individual families, and learn about different people in organic ways. They are age appropriate, and our last edition had great titles about big emotions. It was perfect for a busy class of 3 year olds! I am so happy a subscription like this exists, and our class anxiously awaits our next delivery from OurShelves!

We’ve had the OurShelves subscription for almost 2 years now and absolutely love it. I found it extremely difficult as a busy mom to source books featuring diverse characters and story lines that weren’t just diverse statements but rather everyday stories. For example, books like the anti-racist were great however they weren’t exactly suitable for my toddlers craving a story over a statement. OurShelves solved that problem for me and we now have such a wonderful collection of stories about different cultures and bodies and traditions, etc. This is THE box to get, you will not regret it. I cherish every single book that we’ve received.

There was a little mixup on the books we had received when they switched to a new platform awhile back. It’s was not a big deal at all (they sent Bodies Are Cool twice, so like, far from a problem) but they treated it like it was with the best customer service around. I only mention it because the founder even reached out to me to apologize, which still shocks me to this day. Great books with great people behind the mission.

I have been a subscriber of our shelves for several years. In every single box I have received, all of the book are exceptional. Not a single other subscription I have tried has had this level of quality. The stories are always wonderful and the illustrations are just as spectacular. I keep saying how much I would love if they started offering monthly deliveries.

We have loved the boxes we’ve got. Many of our favorites (Bodies Are Cool, Bedtime Bonnet, Plenty of Hugs, Amy Wu and the Patchwork Dragon) have come from OurShelves!

Our family loves the Ourshelves subsciption! The books we have received are all excellent and our two-year-old asks for us to read them all the time. We use them for fun, thoughtful stories and for understanding - for example "Mamma, Mommy, and Me in the Middle" helped our kiddo understand the concept of missing someone and gave her some helpful tools. Ourshelves has sent us some of our favorite books and we appreciate the 'by us, for us' model of celebrating diverse authors and their diverse identities.

We love the books! There are a lot of children's books out there, and some of them are written pretty poorly, or have questionable messages. It's good to support thoughtful authors and great to have beautiful books on our shelves!

The book selection is really lovely, always stuff I wouldn't have heard of otherwise, and I've recommended the subscription to a few other friends and they all love it, too. Quality products and first-rate customer service…I highly recommend.

Reading has always been very important in our family, so, I was delighted to find OurShelves and get my grandkids hooked up with some diverse books that I didn’t even have to shop for! The kids were delighted to get packages in the mail, and also books, so it was a win/win for us all. Each quarter when the books arrive, the kids haul them to my house to be properly shown off. Some go home again, some stay here. There are so many wonderful books showing every kind of family, and the kids certainly love reading—which was the entire goal. If I had to pick one book out of them all, it would be “The Red Stroller.” It came in the very first package, and I practically know it by heart now. The kids still love to trace the stroller’s path in the lovely illustrations, and Gwen loves to point out to me that the story comes full circle. She can even read most of it herself now. Theo likes to pretend he can read it to me, and knows the story so well that he just about can.
There is so much competition for their time and energy, and these wonderful books have provided respite and quiet time at the end of many busy days, while also modeling inclusivity and diversity—without any preachiness. Thank you very much for providing this old lady with some “couch time” that enables me to spend time with the kids without killing myself.

OurShelves does a great job of picking books that feature main characters you don't often see in mainstream book boxes (BIPOC, LGBTQ+ peeps, etc), and they often represent refreshingly wide points of view, writing styles, and languages. It's really cool. These books are just super fun children's books, they are some of my daughter's favorites! And their customer service is amazing!

I just want to say well done! I've subscribed to many children's book services and this one is by far the best. You can tell a lot of thought has been put into the selection of books. I am beyond satisfied and I hope that Ourshelves continues to deliver such great messages to our children in the form of insightful and relevant literature.

It makes my day when an OurShelves shipment arrives. The books are awesome because they not only expose my kids to different family structures, ethnicities, races, and religions from their own, but they're also just really good stories. Before bedtime, my older son always asks me to read books OurShelves has sent to us, and he's a tough critic!

As a parent who seeks out diverse children's books on my own, I am consistently impressed by the range and quality of the books in my Our Shelves box each quarter. They are much better than what I find on my own (both high quality printing, but even more importantly for me, wonderfully targeted at my son's age and understanding). Even during the shipping chaos of 2020, Our Shelves stayed in communication with subscribers and delivered books throughout the year like normal.
I also appreciate supporting a subscription that helps to make the case to publishers that there are lots of families who want to see greater diversity in children's picture books. We really do exist, and Our Shelves helps to make the case that there is a market for racial, gender, sexual orientation, cultural, disability, and other forms of diversity.
