"Joining the Feelings & First series in bilingual Spanish: a young child helps his Mum and Mama cook a green vegetable soup, but then emphatically refuses to eat it. After carefully watching his parents enjoying the meal, the child finds himself pleasantly surprised when he finally tastes it. Full of humor and sound effects, this adorable and relatable tale offers positive models for handling food reluctance. Also available in English." (This description comes from this book's publisher, Barefoot Books.)

    2. BABY'S FIRST WORDS by Christiane Engel

"Learn over 100 early vocabulary words with a toothy toddler and her two dads! Cheerful acrylic illustrations and digital collage artwork will keep little eyes glued to the pages, searching for the silly woolly mammoth on each one. Designed to support babies' natural pattern of language development, this first word book for the modern world reflects the earliest nouns, verbs, prepositions, adjectives and interjections that children learn to say." (This description comes from this book's publisher, Barefoot Books.) (Also available in Spanish/English.)

    3. EARLY ONE MORNING authored by Lawrence Schimel and illustrated by Elīna Brasliņa

Book cover of EARLY ONE MORNING authored by Lawrence Schimel and illustrated by Elina Braslina

"A young boy is awake before his moms and sister. It’s too early to make a sound...but what’s that noise?! Two rumbling tummies need to be fed! Letting themselves into the kitchen, the boy and his cat finish their breakfast just in time to say 'Good morning' when the rest of the family wakes up." (This description comes from the book's publisher, Orca Books.)

      4. FAMILIES CAN authored by Dan Saks, illustrated by Brooke Smart

Book cover of FAMILIES CAN authored by Dan Saks, illustrated by Brooke Smart

"A rhyming, light-hearted celebration of the wonderful differences that make each family unique.

        A family can be
        Any kind of number
        Maybe there’s one parent
        Strong like thunder

This charmingly heartfelt board book is for families: families who cook together and families who sing together, families with lots of members and families with a special few, families who live together and families who live separately–for all families. Celebrate the differences that make each family unique and the similarities and love that connect us all together." (This description comes from the book's publisher, Penguin Random House).

        5. UH-OH! authored by Shutta Crum, illustrated by Patrice Barton

Book cover of UH OH! authored by Shutta Crum, illustrated by Patrice Barton

OurShelves selected this book because the characters can be read as an LGBTQ+-parented family. When it was next to impossible to find any books at all depicting her kids' two-mom family, OurShelves Founder Alli Harper loved reading this book to her children because they both loved the simple story, and they could also read their family type into the book.

"A charming summer board book that's just right for toddlers . . .

What does a toddler say when she drops her sunglasses in the sand? 'Uh-Oh!'
What does she say when a seagull lands on her sandcastle? 'Uh-Oh!'
What does she say when she finds a crab in her pail? 'Uh-Oh!'
And what does she say when a BIG wave is coming? That's the biggest 'Uh-Oh!' of all!"

(This description comes from Penguin Random House, distributor of this Knopf Books for Young Readers title).

          6. KISS BY KISS / OCÊHTOWINA by Richard Van Camp, translated into Cree by Mary Cardinal Collins

Book cover of KISS BY KISS / OCÊHTOWINA by Richard Van Camp, translated into Cree by Mary Cardinal Collins

"One kiss, two kiss, three kiss, four! So many kisses and so many more.

From bestselling author Richard Van Camp comes a delightful counting book that honors families [of all kinds, including at least one family that can be read as LGBTQ+] . . . . Ten kisses from your sweet baby might not be enough to get you through this adorable book, so you'll just have to read it over and over!"
